USA - Illinois - Evanston - Northwestern University - Institute for Nanotechnology - Research Experience for Teachers (RET)

Ongoing professional development for teachers is an important step in the revitalization of science education. Teachers need opportunities to stay abreast of the latest in technological advances, to develop lasting professional relationships, and to discover ways to share the excitement of interdisciplinary science with their students. In answer to this need, the Center offers an innovative summer program for K-12 science teachers and community college faculty.

Program Description (8 weeks)

Participants engage in hands-on nanoscience or nanotechnology related research over the first four weeks under the mentorship of center faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. Weekly group meetings, laboratory tours, and events broaden the experience.

For the remaining four weeks of the program, participants fine-tune and test ideas based on their research projects and develop them into effective curricular projects that introduce nanotechnology concepts to pre-college students.

Final projects are presented at the closing symposium and a written report is required. Additional funding may be available to support the presentation of teaching units at regional and/or national meetings.

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a bachelor's degree in the physical sciences or engineering and be currently employed as a K-12 science teacher or community college faculty. Selections are based upon application materials and the availability of a research project compatible with the applicant's scientific and professional interests.

Deadline for Application

The application deadline is February 1 prior to the summer that you would like to participate. Notification of acceptance begins March 1.

Stipend

The program provides a stipend of $6,000.
