USA - Illinois - Evanston - Northwestern University - Institute for Nanotechnology - Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Active hands-on research infuses the traditional undergraduate curriculum with excitement. These experiences provide participants with a glimpse into the life of a scientific researcher and opportunities to meet and work with world-renowned scientists.
Program Description
The REU program is held for a 9-week period over the summer. Participants engage in full-time research on a nano-related topic. Regular group meetings with the program directors give students opportunities to share their progress along the way, and gain a broad overview of a wide array of scientific projects. Additional activities include special lectures, field trips, a public speaking seminar, summer picnic, and tours of facilities and laboratories. At the end of the summer, each participant completes a substantive research paper on their activities and accomplishments, and presents their findings at the closing symposium. Participants also complete pre-program and end-of-program evaluations, which form the basis for program development and improvement.
Eligibility and Application Process
To be eligible for the REU program you must be an undergraduate and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, majoring in the physical sciences or engineering, with at least one year left to complete your degree. Applicants are selected based upon academic achievements and scientific interests.
Efforts are also made to offer these opportunties to students from smaller schools where research equipment and opportunities might not be available, and to encourage participation by young women and minorities.
Deadline for Application
The application deadline is February 1 prior to the summer that you would like to participate. Notification of acceptance begins February 15.
Stipend
REU Participants work full-time for 9 weeks over the summer and receive a $4,000 stipend. The stipend does not include housing costs, but reasonable dorm housing is available. Limited assistance with travel costs is available for those with financial need.
