USA - Texas - Houston - Rice University - Center for Biological & Environmental Nanotechnology - 9th Grade Teacher Training Summer Internship

9th-Grade Teacher Training: Summer Internship.

A four-to-six week summer program to let teachers experience scientific research firsthand.

Target Audience
This program is exculsively for 9th-grade Houston Independent School District (HISD) teachers that are involved in the HISD Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) curriculum.

Goals
The goals of this program are to strongly reinforce each teacher's sense of science as a process, to deepen each teacher's understanding of the achievements and potential of nanoscience, and to apply lessons learned from the content class to a research setting. Given that these are 9th-grade teachers and the summer internship only lasts a few weeks, these objectives will be pursued with the teachers in observing and assisting roles rather than through their own independent research projects.

Program Structure
Teachers participating in the spring content course will select a center laboratory from the range of research topics presented, and will over the course of this program spend four days per week observing and assisting in the research, as well as interviewing lab personnel. The teachers understanding of nanoscience will be demonstrated by the construction of a web page that explains the research of the host lab at a level appropriate for a high school teacher or student. Training in the creation of web pages will be done by the Rice User Services Training Coordinator.

The web page will provide the researcher with a product of value in exchange for the time and space committed to the teacher, while the teacher learns about the research and about web page construction. On the fifth day of each week, the teachers will discuss activities in their respective labs, review existing nanoscience and materials science classroom resources, and develop a personal plan that applies Center science to at least one unit in IPC.
