USA - Texas - Houston - Rice University - Center for Biological & Environmental Nanotechnology - 9th Grade Teacher Training Model Science Lab II

Semester-long sabatical residency in an inner-city high school.

Target Audience
This program is exculsively for 9th-grade Houston Independent School District (HISD) teachers that are involved in the HISD Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) curriculum.

Goals
Train teachers in constructivist teaching techniques.

History
The program described here is based on extending a successful 8th-grade program to the 9th grade. The Model Science Lab (MSL), a project of the Rice Center for Education under the direction of Dr. Elnora Harcombe that has operated for the past 12 years, is an intense residency program in which eight middle school science teachers spend a sabbatical year in an inner city school studying and class-testing discovery-based approaches to science education. Tangible achievements of the MSL include an almost perfect teacher retention rate (95% after 10 years), the professionalization of a cadre of teachers who act as peer mentors, and the improvement in student test scores.

The students of MSL teachers achieved greater improvement on a pre/post modified NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) test than students taught by control teachers in each of their schools.
