USA - Texas - Houston - Rice University - Center for Biological & Environmental Nanotechnology - Middle School Programs

Educational Outreach: Middle School Programs

NanoKidsTM
The NanoKids educational outreach program, headed by Dr. James M. Tour, Chao Professor of Chemistry at Rice University, is dedicated to increasing public knowledge of the nanoscale world and the emerging molecular research and technology that is rapidly expanding internationally. Based on actual anthropomorphic molecules synthesized in the laboratory, the NanoKids visual concept utilizes universally recognized forms exhibiting human characteristics to instruct, motivate, and entertain.

NanoBoy
Left: Space-filling model of molecule synthesized.
Right: Anthropomorphized character based on molecules for use in animations.

NanoBoy Profile
NanoBoy's composition is C39H42O2. He stands 2 nanometers tall and weighs 542.750 grams per mole.

NanoGirl Profile
NanoGirl weighs in at 584.829 grams per mole, is slightly taller because of her pony tail, and is C42H48O2 in composition.

The development team is designing a support curriculum for K-12 that employs NanoBoy, NanoGirl and Friends as teaching tools to instruct students at the molecular level through animated video/DVD stand-alone lessons and interactive CD workbooks with appropriate experiments, field trips and ancillary activities. A teacher's study guide and a parents' study guide accompany each lesson, so that learning nanoscale science becomes a school and family affair.

The first target group is grades 6-9. The second target group is grades 10-12. The third target group is grades K-5. The anticipated length from design to final national implementation is five years.

If you are interested in becoming a participant in a formative evaluation student focus group, teacher focus group, parent focus group, or test site school.
