This is an opportunity for Undergraduate Students to:
experience independent research in the rapidly developing field of nanotechnology at a leading academic center
develop your practical skills for research
gain in-depth perspective on opportunities in the interdisciplinary science of nanotechnologies
become part of a nanotechnology research community
recognize the importance of reporting and dissemination of results and development of skills in this integral and essential part of research

Nanoelectronics:
Nanometer scale organic transistors
Growth and measurement of carbon nanotubes
Characterization of novel silicon nanoelectronic devices
Nanomagnetics:
Manipulating Nanomagnets with Spin-Polarized Currents
From Schrodinger's equation to spintronics
Internal dynamics of nanoscale magnets
Manipulating the Properties of Magnetic Materials at the Nanoscale for Spintronics
Nanophotonics:
Quantum confinement of electrons in lead-salt nanocrystals
Characterization of magneto-photonic structures
Optical modulator on-chip
Characterization of On-Chip Optoelectronic Systems
Nanocharacterization and Processing:
A novel tip design and fabrication for the scanning Kelvin probe microscopy
Chemical control of surface morphology
Detecting the motion of a radiofrequency mechanical oscillator
Study of Quantum Structires with Atomic Resolution Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy
Program Information
interdisciplinary nanoscience projects with Cornell faculty addressing the physics, chemistry, fabrication and analysis of next generation information technologies
participation in nano lectures on cutting edge research
nano courses for research skill building and lab visits
early decision deadline: February 1, 2005
regular admission deadline: May 1, 2005
duration: 10 weeks, from June 5th to August 12th
stipend: $ 3800 + funds for travel
on-campus housing with your fellow summer students
meal plan including on- and off-campus dining
a variety of recreational activities
Eligibility
open to fall 2005 undergraduates who are US citizens or permanent residents
minority and female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply
all physical science and engineering majors are welcome to apply
